Almost down and out! Two lives remain!
I was late in last night after basketball practice so didn’t have much time to write a full synopsis for today’s selections.
The strategy today will be to oppose the common thinking that a high draw is required over 7 furlongs and 1mile at Goodwood. The stats indicate that this is the case on firm ground but over the predicted going (good/soft), a mid draw is required.
In fact, I’m going to make a bold selection in for one of thee Hannon horses Lord Links who is a course and distance specialist drawn in stall 3 (½ point win).
As this is a competitive handicap, for my two against the field I will also plump for lightly raced Tabadul drawn in stall 8. Unlucky in running last time out, and kept in training by his owner Al Maktoum, I’m hoping for a big run today in the “get me out of trouble, or I’m our of the Search for a Tipster competition” handicap!!

A massive field but the draw was less of a factor than usual, with the field coming across towards the stands' side in the straight.
PLECTRUM was the least exposed in the race, having had just three runs in maidens. He had run respectably every time, but had done nothing to suggest that he would win a competitive handicap like this by such a wide margin, striding right away inside the final furlong after taking it up almost 2f out. The slightly shorter trip and easier ground were probably factors,but the handicapper will make him pay, so he is likely to be turned out quickly again under a penalty at Newmarket on Friday when he ought to be hard to beat.
Last year's winner Pango was at the back of the field at the top of the straight. He came up the middle of the track and, having taken second inside the final furlong, was not given a hard time in hopeless pursuit of the winner. Considering the type of race he usually contests, one win and four places from six starts here is an excellent record.
Ridge Boy, unproven on this sort of ground, ran another big race in defeat, prominent throughout, and so did Waterside, who is another who likes to force it. This track suits their style of running.
There were bits of scrimmaging in behind - Selective was a minor sufferer - but nothing that had any real effect on the result. What was noticeable, however, was that Pango apart, few horses came from very far back.
Border Music was an exception, but he has become so frustrating that one would not want to get at all carried away about him.
It was also noticeable that some of the beaten horses were heavily eased, among them Lord Links.
Eddie Ahern reported that Vicious Warrior was unsuited by the ground.
Shane Kelly reported that Grey Boy was unsuited by the ground.
