Good competitive racing is what is generally required to produce a decent Placepot dividend and competitive racing is in abundance at Newbury. I predict that upsets will occur in race 3, 5 and 6 hence preference for favourites in races 1, 2 and 4. (Horse number in brackets)

The Placepot busters for most punters were Race 2 and Race 6. As Race 2 was a three runner race, only the winner counts from a Placepot perspective. Many punters made the mistake of singling Fundamentalist (placed 2nd) in their perms and approx ¾ of units crashed at this stage. Moral of the story; It is invariably advantageous to add an alternative selection in races contested by less than five runners.
The £69 return for my perm was adequate compensation for the disappointment of Royal Auclair in the Hennessey Gold Cup.
