The first of the runners from the “Lincoln handicap” system competes today. This system follows the first ten horses from the Lincoln on a ‘stop on win’ policy until July
The horse in question Blythe Night (placed 6th in the Lincoln) was noted as one to be watched if stepped up in trip. He does so today and he has strong claims to this race based on results from recent runs
Listed Littlewoods Bet Direct Winter Derby: 2nd to Eccentric (potentially the All-Weather Horse of the Year)
Listed Johnno Spence Consulting Magnolia Stakes: 2nd to Day Flight (noted as “smart type” in the form book
Stanleybet Lincoln Heritage Handicap: 6th to Stream of Gold who is noted as listed/group class and Blythe Knight had to contend with the draw bias at Doncaster
The only dangers on ratings are St Andrews and Primus Inter Parus. St Andrews was 2nd last time out in a very competitive handicap and is noted as one that could progress to Listed/group status. However his preference is for a softer surface and at the moment the ground is “good”. Rain is predicted at Ripon so conditions may suit later in the day
Primus Inter Parus fits the profile of a horse that runs extremely well fresh and returns to the course after 280 days. An each-way steal if there were 8 runners in the race the only doubt is that he is stepping up in trip today but the form book notes that further will suit.
Given the cramped odds on offer i.e. < 3/1 Blythe Knight is a no bet but I will watch this race with interest.

This was the first race on the round course since the bend was re-aligned last autumn, and the track in now an estimated 50 yards shorter than it was last year, so time comparisons from previous seasons are virtually meaningless.
Hard to know what to make of this conditions event with the 76-rated JATH coming late to beat St Andrews, who had 24lb in hand of her official figures. The winner was stepping up markedly in trip, and had won on her debut as a juvenile, but she is a very inconsistent typeand this form looks highly dubious.
St Andrews, second at Kempon on his reappearance, looked to have plenty in his favour here as he is proven on testing ground and seemed to get the trip. However, though he travelled well, and came through to winhis race despite edging right a furlong out, he was caught by the winner late on. Perhaps ten furlongs on testing ground may be just too stiff a test for him.
The 91-rated King's Thought is a better guide to the form, as he made the running at a decent clip and kept on well enough.
Blythe Knight travelled well, but not for the first time, found little. The going may have been too testing for him, but in essence he's not a horse to trust. However, these four were a long way clear of the others.
