Course Description
A small very tight, left hand circuit of 1 mile with some severe undulations. Most of the course is on the turn, very suitable for front runners and those horses that may need a bit of "kidding". The fences are not difficult.

Usually won by the first or second favourite aged around 6 years old
Analysis
Previous novice chase winners are penalised 6lbs so Tonic Du Charmil and In The Frame are carrying weight burdens. Both horses take a step up in class so further improvement will be required. Very unlikely as both horses are fully exposed.
Poor jumping technique eliminates Dead Mans Dante, which leaves Hot Weld, Ardaghey and The Dark Lord.
When assessing the merits of inexperienced novice chasers, the punting manuals suggest comparison using the official BHB hurdle ratings which are
Hot Weld (128h), Ardaghey(126h) and The Dark Lord (140h).
Even though The Dark World runs extremely well fresh over this distance and is reported to have schooled well over fences, he is an 8yo which for me seems late in the day to turn his hand to chasing. Therefore, preference is for Ardahey form the Nigel Twiston Davies yard.
Ardaghey is lightly raced and his race profile thus far suggests a career as a chaser. In addition his trainer won this race last year and his overall record in chases is far superior to the other trainers.
Hot Weld is stepping back in trip so he may find this distance a bit too sharp

Ardaghey was a non-runner. Did the trainer feel that this race was too hot?

The absence of Ardaghey from last year's winning stable of Ollie Magern took something away but it was still a good contest, although they took it steady until the last mile.
THE DARK LORD was clear best of these over hurdles and, against his penalised rivals, he won nicely enough. He had been brought to the course last year to school over the point-to-point course and was economical over his fences, tending to jump right, until the tempo was upped and he overjumped, pecking on landing. He was switched inside the runner-up to and produced a prodigious leap at the last when the race was won.
Tonic du Charmil deserves plenty of credit under his winner's penalty, making the winner work hard to subdue him along the side of the track and hekept up vain chase in the straight.
With outsider and lowly-rated maiden Dead Mans Dante, who was a detached last through the first half of race, staying on stoutly for third, the form can be knocked. It may be more a case of this step back up in trip suiting and the way he finished suggests three miles is within his scope. He made a bad mistake halfway but attacked his fences under pressure in the last mile. He has plenty of placings to his name and has run out in a race before so is obviously not the most straightforward, although obviously talented.
In The Frame made a bid for glory into the last mile, but belted the last with a circuit to run and his stamina looked to give out in the last half-mile.
Hot Weld was most disappointing, never travelling with any fluency out the back with his stablemate and he dropped away under strong pressure before the last mile.
