Course Description
A left handed over whose circumference extends for almost 1 mile 7 furlongs. Its long, wide straights, since they feature occasional rather mild undulations, are appreciated by long striding gallopers. If the strong suit of such animals is stamina they find Newbury greatly to their liking since its gentle bends can be taken at a good gallop.

For this race, the “At the Races” site has produced a complete set of historical statistics. The key ones being the position of the winner usually comes from the first three in the market. The favourite has only won twice in the last 10 years. Lightly weighted 3yo’s have dominated this race.
Analysis
Day Flight, Mubtaker and Musef head the market so I shall focus my attention on these horses
The conditions of the race state that winners of Group 3 race are penalised 3lbs so Mubtaker and Day Flight will need to shoulder this added burden. Mubtaker at the grand old age of 8 he will be chasing home the other two.
Day flight takes a drop in class and loves soft ground however with historical stats on his side and 3yo weight allowance Musef is the selection (1 point win)

Munsef was 3rd @ 100/10
DAY FLIGHT won his third Group 3 and remains an interesting candidate for bigger races next year when getting cut in the ground, as his connections reported that the colt was not on song when thrashed by Gamut at Group 2 level in the midsummer. He was running away with this race all the way up the straight, making light of his Group 3 penalty, and the only problem was where his jockey would find his run. He was value for considerably more than the bare margin and could return here next spring for the John Porter, which he won this year from Frank Sonata.
Self Defense turned around a host of recent form, having faced many of these this season. He benefited from being settled off the pace and got a dream run through against the inside rail. It is over three years since he won and he is another who likes to get his toe in, but his rating leaves his connections with no option except to contest these type of races.
Munsef was settled last and moved up widest out, going like a winner halfwayup the straight, but he had no answer to Day Flight's burst. The fact he was beaten over five lengths suggests the trip might be stretching him despite his Newmarket win in a steadily run affair. He remains an improving three-year-old, having moving up in class here. He has had Self Defense behind previously but confirmed his Listed-race winning form with Frank Sonata.
Mubtaker was a shade disappointing as a Group 2 winner and with a solid defeat of Self Defense in the book. He moved up going well into the last half-mile, but the eight-year-old was outpaced in the final furlong on tacky ground that probably does not bring out the best in him.
Frank Sonata had conditions in his favour but again showed he is purely Listed class.
Songlark made a move halfway up the straight before looking to struggle in the ground.
*Red Lancer's rider reported that the gelding was unsuited to the ground.
