Course Description
Chepstow is a grade one, left-handed, 2 mile, oval course. The run-in is 240 yards. The track is considered to be undulating with above average fences. The going is often very testing so stamina is important. The course also favours front runners.
Analysis
Boy do I have a sore head after partying with my best mate last night! Anyway I’m very excited as I am off to Chepstow to spend a day at the national event and as I am not driving, I’m sure I’ll have one or two hairy dogs to cure my hangover. Anyway key trends for this race
- A very light weight (< 11 st)
- Out and out stayers (win at or above 3m 2f)
- Previous form at Chepstow
- Proven in testing conditions
Silver Birch is the one to be on!

A very competitive renewal of this stamina test which is always run at a fair pace and can prove a useful guide to the Aintree Grand National, even though the two races are usually staged on very contrasting ground.
SILVER BIRCH stamped himself a smart young staying chaser in the making as he was almost a stone higher than when scoring earlier this season. His victory in the Becher Chase, where he jumped and stayed very well, put him in with a great chance in this contest and he did not let his supporters down with a relentless gallop to victory.
He is now ante-post favourite for the Grand National with some bookmakers and connections plan to give him one more outing before Aintree and, as a result of this, he must go there with a big chance, having proved he handles those fences last time.
Strong Resolve was always up there and emerged as another progressive staying chaser. He never stopped galloping and looks just the type for the Scottish National given his connections. He seems to prefer better ground and there is every likelihood he would get that at Ayr in April.
Chives had a big chance off his current mark but did not seem to quite see out the trip once again. However off this rating there are more races to be won with him,especially as he seems revitalised by his new trainer.
L'Aventure ran a strange sort of race as she seemed to lose touch down the far side before finishing with a flourish up the straight. She may well not be that straightforward on this evidence,but ran a great race for a five-year-old nonetheless.
Bindaree, winner of this race last year off a 9lb lower mark, was far from disgraced on his seasonal reappearance, especially as he was involved in traffic problems at the Severn Bridge and reportedly had to be hacked to the course. In running the way he did, he showed he possesses a lot of his old ability and should come on for this.
Asparagus ran really well from out of the handicap on his first attempt at this extreme trip, but sadly collapsed and died after the race.
Akarus, a faller when holding every chance 12 months ago, had been trained with this race in mind again and though he was not disgraced on his first outing of the season, he did not seem to fully last home. He is becoming a rather frustrating type as he has yet to score in this country and his last victory in France came over two years ago.
