Course Description
Kelso consist of two sharp, left-handed chase and hurdle courses and long striding gallopers are disadvantaged. There is along stiff uphill finish of 490 yards from the last fence, however this track is suitable for front-runners
Analysis
Selection: Faasel (1pt win)
Forecast: Faasel to beat Habitual Dancer.
With soft going conditions predicted (heavy in places), we need to side with a horse that has proven ability on this type of surface and one that can keep up with the pace.
I have never considered laying a horse, but I am sorely tempted in laying Mephisto who is the odds on favourite. Why? I’ll let his trainer explain (post race comments – 19th Feb)

Faasel has done no wrong recently and is on a 4 timer. A course and distance winner he is noted as one that is progressing into a smart hurdler and also one that revels in testing conditions.
In terms of the rest of the runners, only Habitual Dancer shapes as one that might get close to Fassel and surely looks nailed on for a place position.

A short head away from being correct and Mephisto has no issues with the going.
Faasel was 2nd @ odds of 6/4. Habitual Dancer was third at odds of 12/1

Although this lacked strength in depth, the form looks solid, with the first and second both smart performers, and the way they both travelled suggested they would have finished even further clear of the third had they been sent on early.
MEPHISTO(1), who had won a strong race over three miles at Haydock on his previous start, travelled and jumped well, and ran on really well for pressure in what developed into a two-horse race after the last. He's a very interesting prospect and now goes for the two-and-a-half mile novice at Aintree rather than Cheltenham.
Faasel didn't jump quite as well as the winner, but like him travelled well only to lose out in a driving finish. The Triumph is his target, in which he might be fitted with blinkers.
This pair came well clear of Habitual Dancer, who is a useful yardstick but couldn't live with the front two from the second last after making the running.
