Wolverhampton Placepot (12 Nov 2005)
Course Description
My own observations are that the polytrack surface (with the exceptions of races over 5,6,7 furlongs) provides a level playing field with horses winning from a stride or two behind the leaders and from off the pace. Over shorter distances there seems to be a bias for low drawn horses. When the surface is riding deep, horses must be able to stay every yard of the trip off a strong pace.
Luke warm fancies in the 8:30 and a small placepot (again) using speed and handicap ratings are the order for this meeting.
7:00 7f 32yds - "Stoves" At Waterline E B F Maiden Stakes (Class 5) 2yo
Historically the winner hails from the first three in the betting forecast. OHANA and ZOROONI have course experience and are selected. AFTER YOU on breeding and draw should also run well.
7:30 1m - "Belling" At Waterline Maiden Stakes (Class 5) 3yo+
ROCK CHICK tops speed figures and ratings is the selection
8:00 1m 1f - "Neff" At Waterline E B F Maiden Stakes (Class 5) 2yo
GREEN LEMON tops speed figures and ratings is the selection
8:30 5f 20yds - "Hotpoint" At Waterline Handicap (Class 5) 3yo+
Over my favourite distance this was a difficult race to unravel. Statistically stalls 1- 6 are the horses to conside(in draw order)
1. Dixleanna – dropped 2lbs, unexposed on the all weather on breeding should not be an issue,
trainer in good form. Plumb draw
2. Wicked Uncle – Won last time out off 70 in claimer, well handicapped on old form
3. General Feeling – non-runner
4. Law Maker – better over 6 furlongs, trainer has poor Wolverhampton form
5. Divine Spirit – drops in class so the obvious choice given the jockey booking but poor sire and trainer stats at this venue puts me off
6. Gilded Cove – solid all weather performer..
I can't split Dixleanna, Wicked Uncle and Glided Cove, but given the value on offer and proven experience on this surface, WICKED UNCLE and GLIDED COVE are the selections (1 point win)
9:00 1m - "Franke" At Waterline Handicap (Class 6) 3yo+
ZHITOMIR tops speed figures and ratings is the selection
9:30 1m 1f - "Rangemaster" At Waterline Handicap (Class 5) 3yo+
Hopefully at this stage the singletons have performed well so I can triple up in the selections of DESERT LEADER, EASY LAUGHTER and KHANJAR
Got my fingers burnt yesterday so I'll keep stakes within my upper limit of £6.40
18 lines @ 30p line = £5.40

Racing Post Comments
In a competitive handicap at this level, old favourite GILDED COVE delivered his challenge late up the centre to record his eighth course success. He had never won off a mark as high as 67, but is clearly on top of his game.
The same comment applies to After The Show, who returned from almost a year off to win at Southwell last month and, despite being raised 5lb, gave another good account of himself. Divine Spirit did not have much room at the crucial stage, but would not have beaten the first two.
