Course Descripion
The All Weather fibresand surface is much slower than the polytrack used at Lingfield and Wolverhampton and places great demands on stamina. Form on fibresand is often not reproduced on polytrack and vice versa. Generally soft ground turf performers do better on fibresand. The course also favours horses that like to race prominently.
Analysis
When reviewing previous races of this type is was clear to see that over 2 miles a horse needs to have plenty of stamina and proven ability on the fibresand surface.
Early pace is also the key! As the pace increases in the final 7 furlongs, horses that like to run ‘held-up’ at the back of the pack can be confidently eliminated from selection as they will find it very difficult to find ‘5th gear’ and accelerate on this surface. Horses that like to front–run use up all their energy setting the pace usually fade on the run-in, while those that like to race prominently pass tired horses in the final stages.
There a number of horses that are attempting this distance and fibresand for the first time and it may be that one of them finds improvement to win, but in reviewing the breeding preferences of all the contestants the percentage call is to stick to those with all the ticks in the right boxes at Southwell.
Filtering the results over the last two years, with form figures of 1311 and 1322 under these conditions, Peak Park and Macaroni Gold are the stand out selections with preference for Peak Park.
Macaroni Gold has a decent jockey on board, however the handicapper has raised him to a mark where previously he was beaten by over 2½ lengths by guess who? Peak Park!
Ok, so the handicapper has had a say in raising fibresand specialist Peak Park by +6lbs however this only 1lb above a winning handicap mark so a bold show is expect again.

Only a few proven over trip and on the surface and they finished typically strung out. PEAK PARK had shown little on turf of late but developed into a decent stayer on this track early in the year and looks to have resumed that progress judged on this tidy victory, leading over 1f out and keeping on well. Staying races on this track are not generally a competitive arena and he should repay his recent 6,000gns purchase price this winter.
Saffron Fox is not entirely consistent and is on a lengthy losing run but she turned in one of her better efforts and proved that she handles fibresand. As did Monte Cristo, who has been in good form on Polytrack of late and ran right up to his best under a 6lb penalty on this different surface.
Bank On Benny had hinted at ability in the past but this was his first solid form, keeping on after getting outpaced to take fourth, and he looks an out-and-out stayer. The first four came clear of Sun Hill, who hung left in the straight and never really looked like taking advantage of his favourable handicap mark. Reminiscent looked one to be wary of, starting slowly and hanging in the straight. Macaroni Gold is plenty high enough in the handicap and ran in snatches on his debut for a new stable,eased once beaten. Vanishing Dancer ran a very moody race and is another one to have serious reservations about.
